"Thinking About Becoming a Virtual Assistant?"

If you're considering becoming a virtual assistant, but don't know where to start, here's a short recorded webinar and article that will serve as a guide in helping you make that decision.

 

Becoming a Virtual Assistant…Is This Right for Me?

If you’re a mom who’s thinking about becoming a VA - and assuming you already have the skills - then you’ll want to start by asking yourself some basic questions to see if becoming a virtual assistant is something you’re really cut out to do.

1. How well do you manage your time?

Whenever you work from home, regardless of what you do, learning how to manage your time is one of the most important skills you need to learn. As a VA, you’ll need to balance a lot of tasks that will place demands on your time, energy, and attention. In addition to managing, marketing, and growing your own business, you’ll also have to balance all of your clients’ work, and of course, your own day-to-day household responsibilities.  

Now, if you’re already good at managing your time, then becoming a virtual assistant won’t be as challenging for you. If you’re lacking in the area of time management, there’s still hope.

What I recommend is that you start learning all you can about managing your time and begin to make small changes right away. Start by adopting better habits and learning how to schedule and prioritize your daily activities. This will help you learn how to focus and be more productive and prepare you for becoming a virtual assistant.

2. How well do you control your children?

Keeping your children in control is especially important when you work from home. While we all know that kids aren’t perfect, there are simple steps you can take as a work-at-home mom that will make your work easier. Establishing certain rules for when you talk with clients on the phone and having designated play areas are examples of some things you can do to help your kids stay in control.

If you need help in this area, don’t get discouraged… you can always improve. Start learning all you can about disciplining children and then put what you learn into practice. Be consistent with the changes you make and you will begin to see improvement.

3. Are you self-motivated and enthusiastic?

Being a VA takes a lot of positive energy. You have to get up every morning, get dressed, and go to work, so to speak, just like you would a regular job. Of course, you’ll have low energy days—we all have them. The difference is that in order to succeed as a VA, you must motivate yourself since there’s no one to do it for you. You have to stay focused and keep your energy level and enthusiasm high in order to manage and grow your business.

4. How organized are you?

In addition to organizing your business needs, tasks, and information, you’ll also be in charge of keeping all your clients’ work organized. And the more organized you are, the more productive you’ll be.

Again, if you’re not an organized person, you can learn to be, but it will take a commitment on your part, and if you start a VA business before getting organized, be prepared to face some challenges.

5. Do you enjoy people?

How are your social skills? Are you a team player? Do you have good problem solving skills? Being a VA is a people business. Okay, you don’t have to be a social butterfly to succeed, but you will have to be easy to communicate with.

Your clients and prospects will contact you via email and the telephone, so you’ll need to make sure you are comfortable talking with strangers.  Also, keep in mind that the more social you are, the easier it will be for you to get clients, both online and off. After all, it’s much easier to build your business when you enjoy what you’re doing and are excited to share it with others.

In conclusion, please don’t be discouraged if you don’t have all of these skills or personality traits, it’s okay. You can learn. But remember, it takes effort on your part and a real desire, above everything else to change. If you really want to become a virtual assistant, use this as a guide, take action, and the rest will fall into place.
