Home Agents and Call Center Jobs

While reviewing programs for this site, I spoke with more than one mom who was earning $1000 - $1500 a week or more as a home agent for a particular company. After doing research to verify that this was true, I decided to actually join that company as a test for this site, which was one of the worst decisions I ever made in life.

Here's a short audio clip where I tell about my experience working for a call center. You might want to listen to it if you're considering this option for income.

Be careful if you're considering working as a home agent. Be sure the company is reputable and if possible, speak with other home agents who have experience with the company.

Since that bad experience, I've actually spoken with a few moms who've worked for two different companies in this category, and I've heard nothing but good about both of them. Here are the two companies that were recommended to me:

While both of these companies have been in business for a number of years (definitely a plus), keep in mind that I've never worked for either of them personally, so I can't officially recommend them.

I did, however, work through their application process online for the purpose of evaluation. How it works is that once your application is processed and you pay the fees required to set up your call center at home (background check, etc), you also have to pass a few tests (grammar and word comprehension). Once you've passed your tests and are actually hired, they pay you an hourly rate to take calls for different companies.

LIVE OPS and WEST are both companies that hire home agents to work in their call centers. I have never worked for either of these companies, but I have heard good reports about both of them. This is not a personal recommendation.

Here are links to 10 or more companies that hire home agents. I've read a few reviews here and there about some of these, but don't know enough to recommend them either.

Another twist to the home agent concept is working for local business owners who need appointment setters (insurance agents, water testers, etc.) One company I know paid their home agents $10 for each appointment they set instead of paying by the hour. This can be profitable if you don't waste time on the phone and are good with a script.

If this is something you'd like to do, I recommend you check the job listings in your area and make yourself available for home hire.

You might be surprised to learn that--depending on where you live--there are often telecommuting and work-at-home jobs available through the online job boards (see below). You can also try searching on Craigslist, as I've heard ones report good results there as well.

*Be cautious and read the scam section of Craigslist to avoid being taken in by companies or opportunities that are not legitimate. Be sure to do thorough research before applying or giveing out personal information!

Link up and Simply Hired (below) are aggregate sites that can save you time by helping you find the best jobs without having to visit hundreds of company web sites. They offer a variety of search functions, so always try the advanced search by category or industry. Most of the jobs listed are legitimate, but occasionally a scam might sneak in, so it's still important to be careful. You can also check the Jobamatic board for this site.

*My promise is to always let you know whenever I benefit--even a tiny bit--from any link on this site, so please be aware that some of these job searches do pay small referral fees. How much? I have no idea, as I've never earned the first penny from them. When I do, I'll be happy to let you know how it works! ;)

And don't forget...if you're looking for a business, then...

You'll want to research the company that's sent me over 825 paychecks down through the years since it's very reputable. It DOES cost a SMALL amount of money to get started, but the income potential is super and at least you don't have to worry about it closing shop tomorrow! Be sure to fill out the contact form on this page if this option interests you.

If you are currently working any Home Agent Program and can provide me with proof that it is working well for you, please share it with me so I can review it and see if it's something I can feel good about recommending to moms!
