Always Be Collecting

I can’t take credit for this well-worn principle of business, but it’s definitely worth repeating today…

Always Be Collecting NAMES and PHONE numbers!

It matters not whether a person is interested in your product or service or not. While they might be sometime down the road and this could bring you profit, they might NEVER be…and that’s okay! We need to get beyond thinking that this is the the only reason to stay in touch with people. There are many more, but for the purpose of keeping this post short, I want to focus on what I think is the MOST important reason of all for expanding your personal network.

Here it is…

It’s not who YOU know that’s so important; it’s who THEY know. It’s not YOUR sphere of influence or resources…it’s THEIRS.

I’ve been working from home long enough to realize that we can and SHOULD be resources for each other. Yes, believe it or not, most people actually ENJOY helping other people, and here’s the simple truth…

Each person you meet knows at least one skill and one person that you do not know.

So…for every person you stay in touch with, you’ve got the potential of expanding your knowsledge of one new skill and also meeting one new person you haven’t met before. Collectively, the names of people you have in your database could help you tap into resources you never knew were available for helping you accomplish your goals!

So the next time you’re tempted to throw away that crumbled piece of paper you found in your pocket or purse with your friend’s name and email address scribbled on it, stop and think ABC!

Simple and Cheap Self Promotion

One of the moms I spoke with who loves babysitting told me she started out working at a day care center before she was married, and from there she went on to make great money working as a highly paid, private nanny. She attributed her success to the fact that she was highly recommended by so many parents.

This conversation reminded me of a cheap, but highly effective method I’ve used before to promote my own business. It works for ANYone who provides a product or service to a customer (not just babysitters)…

All you need is a high-quality, journal-type notebook and pen. From there, you’ll ask your customers/clients/parent/students, etc. to write what they thought of your product or service, sign their name, and date it. The more stories you collect, the better; but don’t wait to start sharing these with your prospective customers right away.

My hubby and I saw one of these story books at a lodge where we spent the night. We were SO impressed at the comments that we decided to add our own testimonial as well. Could this be one of the reasons they are booked two years in advance?

So if you earn your income from providing a product or service, why not try this? I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
